What a Service Upgrade Actually Involves

People often use service upgrade to mean replacing the panel. Replacing the panel is part of it, but only part, and the difference explains most of the surprise when quotes come in.


An upgrade from a hundred amps to two hundred touches the whole path that power takes from the utility to the house.


The service entrance conductors have to be sized for the new capacity. The old conductors were sized for the old service and will not carry the new one.


The meter socket generally has to be replaced, because sockets are rated for a specific service size.


The mast or the service point, whether overhead or underground, often needs work. Overhead services have height and clearance requirements that may not have been enforced when the original was installed.


The grounding electrode system usually needs to be brought up to current requirements. Older homes were often grounded only to a water pipe, which is no longer sufficient on its own.


The panel itself is replaced, and here is where costs multiply. A new panel is a new installation, which generally means current requirements apply to it. That can mean arc fault and ground fault protection on circuits that previously had neither, and those breakers cost several times what a standard breaker costs.


Then there is the utility coordination. Power has to be disconnected and reconnected, which means scheduling with the utility, and in many areas an inspection has to be passed before reconnection.


None of this is unusual work, but the sequence is why an upgrade is measured in days rather than hours, and why the number is what it is.


The question of whether it is needed comes down to load rather than age. A hundred amp service running a gas furnace, gas water heater, gas range and no air conditioning may be entirely adequate. The same service is not adequate once you add electric heat, an electric vehicle charger, and central cooling.


A load calculation answers this properly. It is a straightforward arithmetic exercise based on square footage, fixed appliances and expected loads, and it produces a number rather than an opinion. Asking for one before agreeing to an upgrade is reasonable.
